Baby killed and mum injured after plunging 6 storeys when faulty lift wasn’t there when the doors opened

    A six-week-old- baby girl has died after her mum pushed her pram into a lift when the doors opened and the lift wasn’t there The two fell down the left and as they both landed on the roof of the lift, the mother’s weight crushed her infant daughter to death.
   The lift car – which was stuck around 8ft below, between the 22nd and 23rd floors – then plunged 6 storeys before stopping. The tragic accident happened at a high-rise riddled with violations, including 45 directly related to the lifts.

    The 21 year old mother, Aberaqed Al-Rabah, told investigators that she didn’t notice that the elevator car wasn’t there when the doors opened — and just pushed the buggy containing 6-week-old Areej Ali into the open space, police sources said.

    The impact killed the baby and sent the elevator plummeting down to the 17th floor, where first responders pulled them both out. Areej was pronounced dead shortly after at Coney Island Hospital.

    The baby's grandafther, 70 year old, Salah Ali, said the mother is in “bad shape.” “She’s in the hospital. She’s injured,” Ali told reporters at the scene. He said:

“It breaks my heart. That was my grandchild.”

    A neighbour said when Areej’s father came home, he nearly passed out after he was told that his daughter was dead and how she had died.

“They’re all screaming and crying next door,” the neighbour added.

    Another neighbour, Jeff Delacruz, who lives in the building, said his aunt spoke to Aberaqed and she kept saying:

“She keeps saying, ‘Everything is OK. It’s OK. God only gave me my baby for one month . . . She’s probably traumatized,” said Delacruz.

    Residents said they had been trapped in the lift several times and it often just stopped, or the doors had to be forced open.
Elizabeth Delacruz said:

“About a week ago, the same one was out of service. The door just didn’t open,”

    The Bay Park complex has a “chronic problem” with its lifts, according to one of hundreds of Department of Buildings complaints. There’s one active complaint from 30 September about the lift that caused Areej’s death.
    There are also two complaints for that elevator from 17 July that have been resolved and a complaint from 9 March 2015, saying the it is “constantly getting out of service” and “has not been working for 2½ weeks.”

     The Department of Buildings said the elevator involved was last inspected on 8 August, and one non-hazardous violation was issued because the emergency phone in the car didn’t work. But DOB inspectors determined it could “safely remain in operation.”

The Starrett Corporation, which owns the building, issued a statement saying:

“We are saddened by today’s tragic incident . . . The incident is now under active investigation and we are cooperating fully with all authorities and agencies to determine the facts surrounding the event. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families involved and management is making arrangements to offer grief counseling upon request.”

Nigerian judges out on bail after weekend arrests

Abuja - The Nigerian judges arrested at the weekend as part of a corruption probe have been released on bail, a source said on Monday, after the detention drew sharp rebuke from legal and rights groups.
"They were all released on bail yesterday (Sunday) on self-recognition," the source within the Department of State Services (DSS) told AFP.
"They did report for investigation this morning (Monday) and they have gone back home. And the investigation continues..." the source added.
"Everything went very procedurally well and civil."
At least seven judges were arrested at the weekend on allegations of receiving bribes, leading to an outcry from the bar association and rights groups who described the raids as "unprecedented".
The investigation involves a total of 15 judges.
 DSS said it had seized $800 000 in cash during the nation-wide operation which was prompted by allegations of corruption and professional misconduct made by other judges.
 On Monday, Chief Justice Mahmud Mohammed condemned the arrests as "deeply regrettable."
The DSS said the arrests followed "lack of co-operation by the National Judicial Council, such as refusal by the NJC to allow the affected persons to be questioned by the DSS."
The agency said its investigation started in April.
 The bar association has scheduled an emergency session on the issue on Tuesday.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler, was voted into power last year on an anti-graft platform.
 But critics have claimed his corruption war is being used as a front to sideline political.

Jeff Serrette Retires From Billboard After 45 Years

 When Jeff Serrette first started at Billboard, Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" was no. 1 on the Hot 100.  Now, Serrette retires after 45 years of service with The Chainsmokers' "Closer" topping the charts.
Serrette began his career on Oct. 15, 1971 as a messenger. After two years, he became a mail clerk. He leaves today (Sept. 23) as part of the sales team, handling classifieds and pro small space sales. In 1993, Serrette won the Billboard President's Award, which honored his team work and ability.
"Jeff could charm anyone into advertising in Billboard, as he did with Aretha Franklin, again and again," special features editor Thom Duffy says.
In fact, Serrette reveals that "partying with Aretha" is one of his favorite memories with the company. "She was an account of mine," he explains. "She has just been terrific whenever she comes to New York."
Of his retirement, Serrette says, "It's surreal. Billboard is part of me. It's bittersweet. Parting with something that has been a tremendous part of my life is sad. But I'm excited as well because it's a new chapter. A new beginning. This is all new to me."
 "Stay passionate, enjoy what you do," Serrette adds as advice for longevity with the company.
Serrette and his wife Rosie are retiring to Daytona Beach, Fla. to be closer to their children, Jeffrey Jr. and Donna, and their grandchildren, Marquis, Kalea and Shayla.

'I'm devastated'- Japanese pole vaulter who got struck on 'erect' penis blasts foreign media after he's ridiculed (photos/video)

Japanese Pole Vaulter at Rio 2016, Hiroki Ogita has hit back on Twitter at the jests and criticism he's received after his seemingly 'erect' penis and leg hit the bar at 17 feet, 4 inches leading to his disqualification from the men's pole vault competition on Monday.

The video quickly spread online with most people on social media joking that he would have qualified if his erect penis hadn't gotten in the way. The athlete has fired back on Twitter.

 

 

"I never expected the foreign media to take me down like this," the 28-year-old athlete tweeted in Japanese. "It's one thing if it was true, but I have to say I'm pretty devastated that they'd go so far to make something up to mock and ridicule me so much."

"To be honest, it's pretty rough, but I guess I'm in the spotlight so this might be some kind of opportunity. I'll do my best and get the results so that I get the last laugh," he wrote.

 

"It doesn't matter if you do it for a joke or whatever, I ask you to go and watch an actual game at a stadium for once. I hope you appreciate, even a bit, what a great sport pole vaulting is."

 

He eventually tweeted that he was able to see the funny side of the whole episode: "Watching again, this is pretty funny, if I say so myself. LOL."

"He had already pressed on the crossbar so much," pole vaulting coach David Yeo said in Singapore.

"The crossbar was bound to dislodge. I think it was just the crumpling of the fabric which happened at the wrong position."

 

Mr Ogita did clear the bar on his second attempt but as he only managed a height of 5.45m on his final jump, the earlier foul cost him. He finished too far down the field to progress through the qualifying stage.

Former Aston Villa footballer dies after being tasered by police

Former Aston Villa striker Dalian Atkinson has died after being tasered by police in Telford, Shropshire. The 48-year-old died 90 minutes after he was hit by a stun gun on Monday morning August 15, at around1.30am in the Trench area of Telford, Shropshire, UK.

West Mercia Police can confirm that officers responded to a report for the concern for the safety of an individual at approximately 1.30am this morning at an address in Telford," the force said in a statement.

"Upon arrival Taser was deployed and a 48-year-old man, who subsequently received medical attention, was pronounced dead at approximately 3am. West Mercia Police are unable to comment any further as the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as is normal procedure, and will assist the IPCC with their inquiries."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said Atkinson was being taken to Princess Royal Hospital when he suffered a cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving the medical facility.

"We were called by West Mercia Police to an address in Meadow Close in the Trench area of Telford at about 1.45am this morning. An ambulance was dispatched and upon arrival found a man who had been Tasered. As he was being conveyed to Princess Royal Hospital, his condition deteriorated and he went into cardiac arrest. Despite the efforts of the crew and hospital staff, it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead at hospital, shortly after arrival."

Former team-mate Tony Daley, who played for Aston Villa at the same time as Mr Atkinson, tweeted: "Devastating news...RIP Dalian" with an image of a broken heart.
Another former player, Ian Taylor, said: "Just heard news re my old team mate Dalian. Deepest condolences to his family. Only spoke to him last week as well. Sad sad news

Atkinson was a top flight striker in the 1990s, with a goal for league runners-up Aston Villa against Wimbledon. He went on to score at Wembley in 1994 as Villa beat Manchester United to lift the League Cup. Atkinson ended his career playing in South Korea in\
