Kim Kardashian-West robbed of millions by Paris gunmen

Kim Kardashian-West was robbed at gunpoint at a luxury residence in Paris by at least two men dressed as police officers, her publicist and police say.
A police spokesman said the haul from the robbery, mostly jewellery, was worth up to €6 million (£5.2m; $6.7m).
The concierge led the gunmen to the residence where they tied Kardashian-West up in the bathroom, police said.
A spokeswoman for the reality TV star, who is 35, said she was "badly shaken but physically unharmed".
Reports say the star has now left France, flying out of a Paris airport aboard a private jet.
Ina Treciokas told CNN the robbery was carried out by two masked men with guns. Police sources told the Associated Press news agency that they were seeking five assailants, two of whom had forced their way into the house.
A jewellery box containing valuables worth €6 million was stolen, as well as a ring worth €4 million, AP reported, citing police officials.
The robbery took place at about 02:30 local time (00:30 GMT), police said.
Kardashian-West's husband, the rapper Kanye West, was on stage at the Meadows Music and Arts Festival in New York at the time of the robbery. He abruptly ended his set, telling fans: "I'm sorry, family emergency. I have to stop the show."

Tweet: People making jokes about Kim Kardashian tonight would do well to remember that she's a mother, a daughter, a wife, a friend. Be nice or shut up.
It is unclear if the couple's two children, three-year-old daughter North and 10-month-old son Saint, were at the home at the time. Police were guarding the site on Monday.
The star was in Paris for the city's fashion week with her mother Kris Jenner and her sister Kendall Jenner.
Last week she was approached by a prankster who tried to kiss her bottom but was stopped by a bodyguard.
Kardashian-West first rose to fame as a friend and stylist to Paris Hilton. She later appeared in her own reality programme, Keeping up with the Kardashians, about her family.

Tyree King, 13, Fatally Shot by Police in Columbus, Ohio

Police in Columbus, Ohio, were investigating how a 13-year-old boy wanted for questioning Wednesday night in an armed robbery ended up fatally shot by an officer.
The child — later identified by Columbus police as Tyree King — had "pulled a gun from his waistband" when officers attempted to take him and another male into custody, the Columbus Division of Police said in a statement. As the encounter unfolded, an officer shot King "multiple times."
The weapon recovered from the scene was determined to be a BB gun with an attached laser sight, Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said at news conference Thursday morning. She showed a replica image of that BB gun.
"Our officers carry a gun that looks practically identical to this weapon," said Jacobs, adding, "It turns out not to be a firearm, but as you can see, it looks like a firearm that can kill you."
Police were first called to a report of a group of people — including one armed with a gun — demanding money at 7:42 p.m. ET.
Officers arriving at the scene saw three people matching the suspects' descriptions around a block away. However, when they attempted to speak with them, two of the males ran away, police said in a statement.
"Officers followed the males to the alley ... and attempted to take them into custody when one suspect pulled a gun from his waistband," police added. "One officer shot and struck the suspect multiple times."
King was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:22 p.m.
No one else was injured. The other male suspect was interviewed and later released pending further inquiries.
Area resident Chris Naderer told The Columbus Dispatch he heard a gate in his backyard get knocked down and then saw police chasing two young men in an alley outside of his home.
"Heard gun shots, five, 10 seconds afterwards," Naderer also told NBC affiliate WCMH.
As with all police-involved shootings, the officers will receive "mandated psychological support counseling" and be given the opportunity to "take leave time to assist in recovery from a traumatic experience," according to Columbus police.
The officer who fired the shots was later identified as Brian Mason, a nine-year veteran of the force who just recently transferred to the zone where the incident happened. He was being placed on administrative leave for about a week.
Jacobs said investigators are expected to pass their review onto a prosecutor and grand jury, which would determine whether any criminal charges are warranted against the officers involved.
It's unclear whether any surveillance or cellphone footage has been recovered showing the shooting.
Police also did not immediately say whether the officers involved were wearing body cameras. Last month, 30 Columbus cops began testing body-worn cameras and the department is expected to fully implement the devices by the end of the year, WCMH reported.
"You have to feel for the family in this and you also have to think about what the officer's going through," Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner told reporters late Wednesday. "There's no winners here."

King was last enrolled at Linden STEM Academy as an eighth grader, WCMH said.
The city of Columbus has seen 13 police-involved shootings this year. Five ended with a civilian being fatally shot, and one resulted in the death of the officer.
The incident in Columbus comes almost two years after 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot dead by a police officer in Cleveland.
Rice, a black sixth-grade student, was holding a pellet gun when the officer shot him within two seconds of arriving at the scene.
His death sparked protests over policing and racial bias. Last December, a grand jury chose not to indict the two officers involved. In April, the city of Cleveland agreed to pay $6 million to settle a civil rights lawsuit brought by the Rice family.
Jacobs said it's too early to compare the shootings of King and Rice, although they both involve young black children carrying BB gun being fatally shot by white officers.
"We don't have enough facts to know anything how this relates to any other shooting, including Tamir Rice's," Jacobs said. "That's why we do an investigation."
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther called for calm while the investigation continues, but he said the shooting raises concerns about access to weapons, including BB guns made to look like actual firearms.
"We as a community need to come to grips with the fact that with such easy access to guns — whether they're firearms or replicas — there's something wrong with this country," Ginther said, "and it's bringing this epidemic to our city streets."

Mother Theresa Declared Saint by Pope Francis

Pope Francis has declared Mother Teresa of Calcutta, known as the "saint of the gutters" during her life, a saint, just 19 years after her death.
Applause erupted in St Peter's Square at the Vatican even before Francis finished pronouncing the rite of canonisation at the start of the Mass for the nun on Sunday, with the attendance of tens of thousands of pilgrims.
Pilgrims streamed into the square from early morning ahead of a service to honour the nun and Nobel peace laureate, who worked among the world's poorest in the slums of the Indian city now known as Kolkata.
"For the honour of the Blessed Trinity ... we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta (Kolkata) to be a Saint and we enroll her among the Saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole Church," the pontiff said in Latin.

Francis said that even though the nun had been declared a saint, she would always be Mother Teresa to the Catholic family.
Echoing his own vision of a "poor church for the poor", the pope described Teresa's work as "eloquent witness to God's closeness to the poorest of the poor."
To applause, he added: "Mother Teresa loved to say, 'perhaps I don't speak their language but I can smile'.
"Let us carry her smile in our hearts and give it to those whom we meet along our journey, especially those who suffer."

Role model

Millions of Catholics revere the nun as a model of compassion, and more than 100,000 people were expected at the mid-morning ceremony in front of St Peter's Basilica, decked out with a canvas of the late nun in her trademark blue-hemmed white robes.
Mother Teresa's legacy complements Pope Francis's vision of a humble church that strives to serve the poor, and the festivities are a highlight of his Holy Year of Mercy, which runs until November 8.

Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee, reporting from the Vatican, said that speeding up the canonisation of Teresa helped the Pope Francis' campaign for social justice.
"Before Pope Francis took over the job, the Catholic Church was in a real mess. There were scandals affiliated with the church and corruption, resignation of Pope Benedict and the loss of direction of the church," he said.
"Pope Francis is trying to see a resetting and a new sense of direction revolved around social change and helping the poor. And speeding up the canonisation of Teresa helps this goal."

G20 leaders told 'avoid empty talk' by China's Xi Jinping

China's President Xi Jinping has urged leaders of the world's 20 largest economies to avoid "empty talk" as they look to quicken economic growth.
World leaders are at the annual G20 economic summit, which is being hosted in China for the first time.
President Xi said the global economy was at a "crucial juncture" due to volatile markets and feeble trade.
Also discussed on the first day of the G20 were the global steel crisis, trade barriers and the UK's Brexit talks.
President Xi said: "Against risks and challenges facing the world economy, the international community has high expectations of the G20 in the Hangzhou summit."
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the G20 leaders had agreed they need to work together to increase economic growth.

However, it is unlikely a major deal will be struck, particularly as the most productive discussions are taking place one-on-one, said BBC Asia Pacific editor Celia Hatton.
President Xi urged his counterparts to avoid empty talk in their attempts to boost trade, but his "critics might raise an eyebrow at this: China is often accused of putting up trade barriers, not tearing them down," she added.

Ahead of the meeting, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned it was likely to downgrade its forecast for global economic growth again this year.
The IMF has already reduced its global outlook after the Brexit vote, cutting forecasts for world GDP growth to 3.1% for 2016 and 3.4% for 2017.
'What Brexit Means'
It is the final G20 summit for US President Barack Obama and the first for British Prime Minister Theresa May.
At a joint press conference, President Obama said the first task for Britain following the EU referendum was to "figure out what Brexit means with respect to Europe".
He added that the US would prioritise its trade talks with the EU - known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) - ahead of talks with the UK.
Mrs May will be explaining at the two-day summit in the city of Hangzhou what the British decision to leave the EU might entail.
It comes as Japan's government has issued a stark warning about the possible impact of Brexit on the country's firms operating in the UK.
HINKLEY POINT
Mrs May has also defended her surprise delay in making a decision on the £18bn Hinkley Point nuclear power project, saying she would "look at the evidence and consider it properly".
"I've been very clear that I will be doing that and will be taking a decision sometime this month," she added.

The Prime Minister is due to discuss the project with President Xi amid heightened diplomatic tensions over her perceived concerns about Chinese involvement in Hinkley Point.

Steel crisis

China's continued production of cheap steel was also an issue on the opening day of the summit.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said China must address its problem of industrial overcapacity, saying it was "unacceptable" the European steel industry had lost so many jobs in recent years.
"Overcapacity is a global problem but there is a particular Chinese element," Mr Juncker said.
He also defended the EU commission's decision to hit tech giant Apple with a €13bn (£11bn) bill for unpaid taxes, saying it was not aimed at the US.
"We are basing our decisions on facts and on the legislation," Mr Juncker said. "This is not a decision against the United States of America."

Mia Ayliffe-Chung: 'Infectiously happy' British backpacker stabbed to death by knifeman 'shouting Allahu Akbar' in hostel rampage

A young British backpacker who was stabbed to death as a knifeman went on a rampage at an Australian hostel was "infectiously happy", friends said today.
Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21, was knifed in a frenzied attack in front of more than 30 people by a man who was allegedly shouting "Allahu Akbar" in Queensland.
A 31-year-old British man was also left fighting for his life and a dog was stabbed to death at Shelly’s Backpackers in the small town of Home Hill, south of Townsville.
A 29-year-old French man is now in police custody over the killing.

A third man, who intervened, was also stabbed in the leg but his wounds were not life-threatening and he was released from hospital following the attack last night.
Police are investigating whether the arrested man – who had been in the country for several months – has anylink to terror organisations.mia.jpg

Ms Ayliffe-Chung, who worked at The Bedroom nightclub, in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, had been in the area for 10 days and was planning to find work as a fruit picker.
Staff at the venue told local media she was intent on returning to the bar after carrying out a required three-month fruit-picking stint in Home Hill so she could extend her holiday visa.
Ms Ayliffe-Chung, originally from Wirksworth in Derbyshire, was described by friends and colleagues as “full of energy” and “an infectiously happy young girl”.
Close friend Kyle Godwin wrote on Facebook: “Today the world has lost one of the most beautiful young women to ever walk this planet.
“Today I lost a best friend. A girl like no other, one of the happiest, full of energy, delightful, energetic and hilarious girl I've come across.
“Even though I've only known you for a short amount of time it feels like we have been best friends for years, we just seemingly clicked and were like two peas in a pod.
Another friend Rowan Clark said: “Mia was an infectiously happy, young girl, and will be missed dearly.”

Hannah Weisskopf-Biggs described Ms Ayliffe-Chung as “a beautiful and soulful girl”.
Writing on Facebook, she said: “Just can't believe it. Mia Ayliffe-chung was too young and such a beautiful & soulful girl. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.”
Monique Cross, an Australian friend of Miss Ayliffe-Chung, said: "She was a gorgeous person. It's an awful tragedy - I can't believe it."
Tom Paenga wrote on Facebook: "R.I.P Mia. I know that I will not find someone like you again, so happy, so motivating, in good times and in bad times always you were drawing a smile..."
On her Facebook page, Ms Ayliffe-Chung had shared pictures and videos of her time in Queensland, including selfies after long days of farm work and of her time spent working in the nightclub.

She is said to have studied psychology and childcare in the UK.
Supt Ray Rohweder said police were confronted by a “terrible scene” when they arrived at the hostel after the attack at 11.15pm.

Two officers ordered the attacker, who had injuries to his arms, to lay on the ground and grabbed the knife he used in the attack.

Queensland state Deputy Police Commissioner Steve Golleschewski told reporters: “Initial inquiries indicate that comments which may be construed as being of an extremist nature were made by the alleged offender..
“We’ve had three people stabbed, one deceased, one critically injured. It’s a shocking attack by any standards.”

The arrested man, who has been in Australia on a temporary visa since March, was also caught on police body camera shouting ‘Allah Akbar” as he was taken into custody.
The man was taken to Townsville Hospital to be assessed for mental health and drug issues as anti-terror police began their investigation into the horrific crime.
No charges have yet been laid.
