Boko Haram: Nigerian officials 'sexually abusing' victims

 

 Women and girls in several camps in the Nigerian town of Maiduguri are being sexually abused by officials, a rights group says.

 Human Rights Watch (HRW) said it had spoken to 43 victims who had been raped or sexually exploited by vigilante groups and security officials.
The president has ordered an investigation into the alleged abuses.
 Islamist militant group Boko Haram's insurgency has left 20,000 people dead and more than two million displaced.
 Many of those forced from their homes have fled to camps around the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.
However, the HRW report says some of them have suffered abuse in those camps.
 Some said they had been coerced into sex and abandoned when they became pregnant.
"It is disgraceful and outrageous that people who should protect these women and girls are attacking and abusing them," said HRW's Mausi Segun.
 The group said irregular supplies of food, clothing, medicine and other essentials in internally displaced camps in Maiduguri had made women and girls - many of whom are widows and unaccompanied orphans - more vulnerable.
  In response to the report, President Muhammadu Buhari said he was "worried and shocked" and vowed to protect those in the camps.
He ordered the police and state governors to investigate.
Hundreds of refugees, including children, starved to death in one of the camps earlier this year, causing a "catastrophic humanitarian emergency", according to medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres.

'Drugged and raped'

  Four people told HRW they had been drugged and raped; 37 others said they had been coerced into sex through false marriage promises and material and financial assistance.
 A 16-year-old girl who fled a brutal Boko Haram attack on Baga in northern Borno in January 2015 said she had been drugged and raped by a vigilante in charge of distributing aid in the camp.
 "He would bring me food items like rice and spaghetti so I believed he really wanted to marry me," the girl said.
 "But he was also asking me for sex. I always told him I was too small [young]. The day he raped me, he offered me a drink in a cup. As soon as I drank it, I slept off.
 "I knew something was wrong when I woke up. I was in pain and blood was coming out of my private part.  I did not tell anyone because I was afraid," she recounted.
She said she became pregnant but her attacker fled the camp when he heard she had delivered.

Nigerian woman who paid man £1,000 to pose as her baby's father to gain British citizenship has been jailed

   Faust Abolore plotted to gain British citizenship by putting 44-year-old Anthony Ezekpo’s name on her son’s birth certificate and a subsequent passport application. However, she was caught when photographs of the child’s real father, Nigerian national Peter Gentry, were posted on Facebook, showing him cradling the boy at a naming ceremony.
    Inner London crown court heard that Abolore got a job as a care home assistant in 2011 with a bogus Portuguese passport, and had twice been turned down for leave to remain in 2013 and 2014.
    Sentencing Abolore and Ezekpo to 18 months each, Judge Mark Bishop said:
    "These sort of offences undermine confidence in the system of immigration control. You, Abolore, were seeking to cheat your way into being allowed to remain in this country. Ezekpo, you agreed to help her in making that possible."
    Abolore, who was living with Mr Gentry in Erith, gave birth at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich on August 6, 2014. Prosecutor Alex Mills said:
    "Ms Abolore entered an agreement with Mr Ezekpo whereby he would pretend to be the father of that child." The pair went to a register office and signed the birth certificate which said Ezekpo was the boy’s father and claimed they lived together in Erith. "There had been a payment of £1,000 which coincided with the visit to the register office," said Mr Mills.
    In November 2014, Abolore applied for leave to remain in the UK, based on the birth of the child. However, the Facebook photos of Mr Gentry undermined their story, and it emerged that Ezekpo lived in the North East. Mr Mills said Abolore’s use of a false passport to get the care assistant job emerged during the police investigation, when detectives found a passport bearing Abolore’s picture but a different name.
    The court heard that Abolore still insists that Ezekpo is the child’s father. Abolore and Ezekpo, of Winlaton, near Gateshead, were found guilty by a jury of conspiracy to breach immigration law and gi.

Nigerian judges out on bail after weekend arrests

Abuja - The Nigerian judges arrested at the weekend as part of a corruption probe have been released on bail, a source said on Monday, after the detention drew sharp rebuke from legal and rights groups.
"They were all released on bail yesterday (Sunday) on self-recognition," the source within the Department of State Services (DSS) told AFP.
"They did report for investigation this morning (Monday) and they have gone back home. And the investigation continues..." the source added.
"Everything went very procedurally well and civil."
At least seven judges were arrested at the weekend on allegations of receiving bribes, leading to an outcry from the bar association and rights groups who described the raids as "unprecedented".
The investigation involves a total of 15 judges.
 DSS said it had seized $800 000 in cash during the nation-wide operation which was prompted by allegations of corruption and professional misconduct made by other judges.
 On Monday, Chief Justice Mahmud Mohammed condemned the arrests as "deeply regrettable."
The DSS said the arrests followed "lack of co-operation by the National Judicial Council, such as refusal by the NJC to allow the affected persons to be questioned by the DSS."
The agency said its investigation started in April.
 The bar association has scheduled an emergency session on the issue on Tuesday.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler, was voted into power last year on an anti-graft platform.
 But critics have claimed his corruption war is being used as a front to sideline political.

Two Nigerian men arrested in India

Two Nigerian men were arrested on Friday, September 30th by a joint team of Delhi and Goa Police for cheating several people after befriending them on social networking sites.

The suspects identified as Chukwuma Collins, 35, and Nicodemus Obinn, 27, used to befriend people on Facebook and then ask for money to send "necessary items" to their family members in UK. 

Police said that the two used to cook up stories about the poor conditions of their family members living in western countries and ask the victims to help them with money. After receiving the money they broke all contact with the victims.  Both have been involved in several cases of fraud and an FIR was registered against them in Goa cyber crime cell.

Bridget Fernandes Rai, a victim made a complaint to Goa Police, claiming to have been cheated of around Rs 8 lakh by the duo. She said that she had befriended Collins on Facebook and after a few days of chatting he started calling her.

Rai told the police that Collins started referring to her as his sister and asked for Rs 8 lakh to transfer some money and jewellery through a courier to his relatives. He claimed that the courier was stuck in legal processes at the customs department in Goa and he needed to get it delivered quickly as his wife had expired.

Rai agreed to transfer the money to his account. As soon as the money was transferred, Collins disappeared. After some time, Bridget received a call from the custom department, which raised questions regarding the parcel she had sent, and realised that she was duped.

"A team from Goa Police approached us in Delhi after a technical surveillance pointed to role of some people operating from here. A joint team was formed to track the accused. The duo was arrested from Mahavir Enclave in south Delhi," said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner, crime.

Collins and Obinn confessed to their crime and disclosed that they had cheated several others in a similar way. Three laptops, seven data cards, 36 SIM cards and 26 mobile phones, three USB pen drives, were recovered from the duo.

During interrogation, the duo claimed that they had arrived in India five years ago for business and then started cheating people using different techniques. Both accused were produced in a Dwarka court and taken on a transit remand by Goa Polic.

Another Nigerian arrested in Morocco with 1.05kg of cocaine in his stomach

The Moroccan authorities on Friday, arrested a Nigerian national who was smuggling 1.05 kilograms of cocaine inside his stomach.

 

According to Moroccan Times, authorities said that the Nigerian man raised suspicion because he did not look quite comfortable in their presence. He was then taken to Casablanca’s Ibn Rush hospital, where he was subjected to a surgery to remove the drugs from his stomach.

The suspect had just landed from a flight coming from Brazil when he was arrested. An investigation was launched and he will stand soon before a judge to defend himself against heavy drug trafficking charges.

'Nobody should die the way he did' - Mother of Nigerian murder victim begs witnesses to come forward.

Ms Yemi Hughes, the devastated mother of a 19-year-old Nigerian teenager who was stabbed to death in Croydon, London has begged for witnesses to come forward.

Andre Aderemi was killed in the Monks Hill estate in South Croydon on Tuesday, August 16. He was stabbed multiple times after being pursued by three armed youths carrying weapons.

The teenager had moved away from the area but his mother Yemi Hughes dropped him off to see a friend at about 7.30pm that fateful day - just 10 minutes before he was stabbed. Ms Hughes said:

"I never thought this would be the last time that I saw him. I received a call to beg me to come as he was screaming for me but by the time I arrived the paramedics were fighting to save his life. I never got to see him alive again, to tell him how much I love him, to see his infectious smile, to cradle my baby in my arms and tell him that I would fix and make everything better," she said. 

"I am begging for witnesses to come forward and give their accounts so that myself and Andre's little brothers can get some closure and justice for my son's murder. Nobody should die the way that he did and I am devastated not only by the loss of Andre but also by the manner in which he died. Our lives will never be the same again, so please if you know anything, no matter how small you think it is, can you pass it onto police."

Four persons have been arrested in connection with the murder. Investigators believe that a number of suspects may have sped off in a car after the stabbing. Detective Chief Inspector Sam Price said:

"Did you witness the incident last Tuesday or see a white vehicle on the estate that night? Did you see any other vehicles that may have been involved? Whilst enquiries are ongoing, we believe a number of people possibly fled the scene in a vehicle following the attack. Were any other individuals involved whom police are not already aware of? I am keen to speak with anyone who saw what happened."

Ali Zahawy, 18, appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court on yesterday, while Jamall Longergan, of Thornton Heath, Fabio Cela, of Croydon, and Rodney Mukasa, of Croydon, all aged 19, were due to appear at the Old Bailey.
