In her touching Instagram post, Fletcher shared a throwback snap of Trey with his father and grandfather.
"Dad was tough but not tyrannical," Smith reportedly once told Essence magazine. "He kept me in line. He'd get this look that said, 'One more step, Will, and it'll get ugly.' He was an independent businessman -- he set up refrigeration in supermarkets -- and he always provided for us. He's a steady and positive figure in my life."
Our condolences go out to the Smith family.

Gigantic sinkhole swallows intersection in Japanese city

A gigantic sinkhole has opened in the southwestern Japanese city of Fukuoka, swallowing huge sections of road near underground work to extend a subway tunnel.
A 7-to 8-meter-wide hole was first reported early Tuesday, according to Motohisa Oda, a crisis management officer from the city of Fukuoka.
Nearby residents were evacuated, and five major roads cordoned off in Hakata ward in Fukuoka's business district.
The gaping hole -- which started off as two smaller ones before merging into the larger cavity -- appeared 300 meters from the JR Hakata railway station.
The sinkhole is now a whopping 27 meters wide, 30 meters long and 15 meters deep.
It is filled with water that seeped in from sewage pipes destroyed by collapsing sections of road.

Subway work was underway

City officials were working nearby to extend the subway from JR Hakata station to the city center along a 1.4-kilometer route.
Oda told CNN that the underground construction work may have triggered the hole.
The sinkhole has cut power to roughly 170 households across the city of Fukuoka. Saibu, a gas supplier, is checking for any gas leaks in the area.
While authorities investigate what exactly caused the hole, a few social media users in Japan have been joking about the kind of monsters that might emerge.

Facebook sued over 'discriminatory' house and job adverts

Facebook is facing legal action over alleged bias in its housing and employment ads.
The claim, brought by a group of Facebook users, alleges the platform's "ethnic affinity" option is racially biased.
The option is there to enable marketers to exclude certain demographics and target others.
Facebook said the lawsuit was "utterly without merit" and that it would defend itself "vigorously".
The lawsuit was filed in Northern California with the lead plaintiff named as Suzanne-Juliette Mobley, according to the Courthouse News Service. It also names up to 9,999 defendants as advertisers who allegedly "used Facebook's platform to discriminate based on race, gender, national origin and other protected attributes".
It claims that allowing advertisers to block users from seeing ads based on these groups is in violation of the Fair Housing Act and the Civil Rights Act.
The 14-page lawsuit adds that there is no option to exclude the demographic of "white or Caucasian Americans from the target audience".

Empowerment tool

Facebook told Courthouse News that the lawsuit was without merit.
A spokesman later told the BBC: "We are committed to providing people with quality ad experiences, which includes helping people see messages that are both relevant to the cultural communities they are interested in and have content that reflects or represents their communities - not just generic content that's targeted to mass audiences.
"We believe that multicultural advertising should be a tool for empowerment. We take a strong stand against advertisers misusing our platform: our policies prohibit using our targeting options to discriminate, and they require compliance with the law. We take prompt enforcement action when we determine that ads violate our policies."
Public interest website Pro Publica led an investigation into the claims last month, creating adverts for the housing market that excluded African Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanics.
When they showed the adverts to civil rights lawyer John Relman he concluded that they were "as blatant a violation of the federal Fair Housing Act as one can find".
In a blogpost, Facebook's head of multicultural, Christian Martinez said: "Living in the US, most of the advertising that I see in traditional media is targeted to people in the majority - people who don't look like me, who don't speak Spanish, and who may not share my experience.
"The experience of ads constantly reminding you that you're different from the majority is incredibly marginalising, and it's not right."
He added that companies offering "multicultural advertising options" allows people to find content that is relevant to them.

Woman whose son was killed while he was robbing, wants the man who shot him to be charged with a crime

A woman, Temia Hairston, whose son, Michael Grace Jr., 28, robbed a Pizza Hut he used to work at is demanding justice for her son who was killed by an employee of the business.

Hairston said her son had been fired from a series of low-paying, unskilled jobs. He had a 4-year-old child, a pregnant girlfriend and was essentially homeless. Hairston said:

“He had lost everything. He lost his Pizza Hut job. He lost his primary job. And because he lost his jobs, he lost his car also,” Hairston, of Charlotte, told The Washington Post.
She added:
“We were talking about baby Michael and I was like, ‘you got to get it together because the child’s mother is having to take care of him by herself because you’re not working. I need you to get yourself together and get back on your grind.’ ” Hairston said she wasn’t sure if her words sunk in.
“He was nodding,” she said of the Oct. 29 conversation, “but he had a look on his face like he had nothing left to lose.”
A few hours after the talk with his mother, Grace called 2 of his friends, put on a mask and went to the west Charlotte Pizza Hut where he used to work, armed with a gun. Police say he and the two men waited until the business was closed, then burst into the restaurant.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say what happened next is still under investigation:
“Three individuals . . . were in the process of robbing the business when one of the employees fired his own personal handgun at one of the robbery suspects, striking him,” the police statement said.
Grace was shot in the head and died on the floor in the early morning of Oct. 30, his mother said. Police say the gun fell from his hand and was recovered next to his body.

Now Grace's mum is saying she wants justice for her son, whose final act was one of “desperation.” She wants the Pizza Hut employee who killed him to be charged with a crime.
“My son was out doing something wrong … I don’t condone his actions, but he didn’t deserve to die,” she said Monday, while crying. “If you decide to rob someone, then you face a judge.
“If prison was where he was going, then prison is where he should be instead of in the ground.”
Police have not charged the person who shot Grace or released his identity.

According to North Carolina law, a person is allowed to use deadly force in self-defense or defense of another. A person is “justified in the use of deadly force and does not have a duty to retreat in any place” if that force is used to prevent death or bodily harm to himself or another.

However, Pizza Hut employees aren’t allowed to carry guns on company property, according to an employee manual posted online. Their first priority during a crime is to contact the police, according to the manual.
“If you observe a weapon on an individual, other than a uniformed police officer, push the security panic button immediately,” the handbook says.
In the statement about Grace’s killing, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the Pizza Hut franchisee was cooperating with the investigation.
“The security of its staff is of utmost concern,” the statement said. “They are providing support to the team members involved to ensure their health and well-being following this incident. The employee involved in the shooting has been placed on a leave of absence following further review.”
Hairston said she’s going to continue to push the company and the police for more details about her son’s death.

Kenyan app Ushahidi monitoring US elections

A team in Kenya and the US are working on the project, Ushahidi's innovation manager has told the BBC.
The platform is being used to collect and verify information which can be shared to affiliated groups for action.
Republican candidate Donald Trump has said he believes the election will be rigged.
Some fear his call for his supporters to monitor the voting process could lead to intimidation.
His opponent, Hillary Clinton, has dismissed the voter fraud allegations.
Millions of Americans are voting to elect a president and leaders in federal and state levels. Other states are also running ballot measures to get the public to vote on local issues.
"The team is currently combing through social media and dealing with messages sent directly to its platform, verifying the content before escalating to the right people," Ushahidi's innovation manager Chris Mukuria told the BBC.
A statement on Ushahidi's website says that it has partnered with several institutions including the Election Protection Committee, "who run one of the largest non-partisan election monitoring organizations in the USA".
"Our honest hope is that all of this is for naught, and that end of the day Tuesday we look at all the reports and that 99.9% of reports say: 'Everything went great!'" Ushahidi's chief operating officer Nathaniel Manning said in a statement.

Ushahidi around the world

Ushahidi was launched in 2008 by a group of activists and developers to monitor and map the violence in Kenya after a disputed election.
The platform has been used in several countries and in different projects, from monitoring sexual harassment in Egypt and to respond to the needs during the earthquake Haiti in 2012.
The application that has been deployed to monitor the US elections has also been used in Mexico and Nigeria, Mr Mukuria said.
"The team plans to continue monitoring the elections until polls close," he added.
Mrs Clinton is the Democratic candidate for the presidential race and is aiming to become the first woman president of the United States.
Mr Trump, a real-estate billionaire and a reality-TV star, beat seasoned politicians in the primaries to emerge as the Republican candidate for the presidential race.

Scotland go into the tournament as one of five debutants, along with Belgium, Portugal, Austria and Switzerland.
Anna Signeul's side, who have never played in a major tournament, qualified as runners-up in their group, their one defeat in eight games coming against group winners Iceland.
The Scotland manager said they "can't wait," for the fixture, adding: "It's a tough group but one for us to relish. We've had good encounters with Spain and Portugal and our players will be very motivated."

England won their group, recording seven wins and a draw to beat Belgium to top spot.
Mark Sampson's side are the third-ranked side at Euro 2017, behind France and Germany, the side they beat beat to finish third at the 2015 World Cup.

Prince Harry condemns press 'abuse' of girlfriend

The statement said the couple were "a few months into a relationship" and it was "not right" that Ms Markle should be subjected to such treatment.
It said the prince rarely took formal action over "fictional stories".
"But the past week has seen a line crossed," it added.
In recent days a number of newspapers have carried front page stories about the 35-year-old actress, best known for playing Rachel Zane in the TV drama Suits.
The statement issued by the prince's communications secretary said: "His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment.
"Some of this has been very public - the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.
"Some of it has been hidden from the public - the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life."
The 32-year-old prince has long had an uneasy relationship with the press, having grown up aware of the impact that intense media intrusion had on the life of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.
When he was 20, he was caught up in a scuffle with a paparazzi photographer outside a London nightclub.
In 2012, naked photographs of him in a Las Vegas hotel room were published online and on newspaper front pages, prompting a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission.
But he has also attracted positive coverage of his charitable interests and military service.
